If you want to run EMC2, then generally, no, you lose all real-time accuracy with virtual machines.
I run VMware under Linux, and run some old CAD applications under Windows 2000 via VMware. This runs great, and Win2K runs for months without reboots, so it works FAR more reliably under VMware. But, the OP wanted to run multiple machines, I don't know what kind of synchronization was needed between them. Yes, in principle, VMware and multiple Linux virtual machines would get around the sharing problems of multiple EMC2 instances. But, it would introduce a HUGE other problem, in that there would be no guaranteed timing of the EMC systems. I am also not too clear on whether VMware supports RT kernels, but would actually be surprised if they do. Since VMware doesn't guarantee timing of the guest OS's, it would seem to be senseless to support them.
