Another possible way to do this is to get small DC tachometers and drive 
them by miniature instrument belt from the motor shaft.  I have a tiny 
WM Berg belt with a steel aircraft cable embedded in it that drives the 
3 tachs on my Bridgeport retrofit.  These have worked quite well for the 
last 10 years.
