Many thanks. Yes, I could see that hm2_pci had come unstuck, but not the
precise cause. (Therefore the "RTAI?" WAG in the subject. ;-)

It detects the PCI9030 about 50 lines into the output shown below.
(Maybe I could have chopped some of it, but the problem thus far is
totally undefined, AFAICT.)
Should I just download the latest EMC2? The 4 month old
ubuntu-8.04-desktop-emc2-aj12-i386.iso could be the weak link, given
that the host is a preferred one from the wiki, and I've done nothing
other than plug in the 5i20 and start emc. Hopefully I haven't omitted
some implicit prerequisite step. (It seems fairly clear from the 5I20
documentation that the SC5I20 and SC5I20W M$ programs are not normally
needed.)
