I have that nagging feeling that you may have downloaded the bit of gcode for the chess pawn on a windows box, then moved it to the linux install somehow. How close am I? Please use the web browser on the linux box that emc is installed on to go get that file. I think it will solve your problem. Windows downloads tend to make windows compatible line end conversions if the file is a text file, and gcode properly is text, and that conversion by adding the carriage returns to the line feeds that linux (and any unix) doesn't need but windows does, and does not play well on a linux box.
