That was my first thought. I really don't want to do this because I will 
be using CSS. There is a very large overlap of speeds but I would prefer 
to manually (in the code) select a gear and stick to it. The last thing 
I want to happen is the spindle to suddenly stop and change gear halfway 
through a cut.

The docs on this are a bit sparse but it looks like I should be able to 
  use a halcmd in few shell scripts to set the appropriate pins.
