I believe that what John is doing is known as a "courtesy copy": he sends a message to the list, and he sends a copy directly to you. Depending which one you reply to (your personal copy or the list copy), a different default reply address will be offered.
The "courtesy copy" is especially useful to people who choose digest mode to receive the list, because they the courtesy copy immediately, before the next digest message is sent. I had never considered that to people unfamiliar with the practice that the "courtesy copy" would seem like an invitation to take the conversation private. I am sure John did not intend to create this confusion with you.
