It does depend on the drive. My mill uses 320s and my biggest gripe is 
that they don't keep track of the position with the power off. My lathe 
has Rutex drives and they do remember the position even during EStop. 
They have separate logic and motor supplies. The rutex drives also have 
a very large following error limit (actually too large in my opinion) so 
it is virtually impossible to make them fault by stopping quickly. I use 
the EStop much more on the lathe because I know I won't lose position.
