Hi Aram,

If this lathe is only to take a couple of small cuts off each wheel,
rather than thinking about making something with a massive faceplate
etc., how about considering rollers? The machine frame may be made
something like a gantry router - maybe even with the frame mainly from
wood. The wheel would be placed on a table horizontally and could be
driven very simply - either with a small chuck or even by just a disk
with a hole to or peg to take the axle and centre the wheel accurately
and a disk with a pin or pins in it to drive on the spokes.
Alternatively, it may be better to drive the rim of the wheel with a
small rubber tyred wheel. The outer rim of the disk would be supported
on several rollers fitted radially to stand a little way above the table
and there would be one or more other rollers or maybe rubber wheels to
hold the rim down at the point where the tool cuts and at a couple of
other points to keep the wheel pressed down gently onto the rollers.
This is just an idea which can be elaborated on but, for just taking the
fash off a carbon fibre moulding, I can't see the need for a massive
machine. Maybe you also don't need a cutting tool as in a lathe but
would be better with a router and a small sanding drum or profile cutter?
