One annoyance with the HB rating is many materials manufacturers just state 
“HB” and not “HB40 or “HB75”.

EN 62368-1 asks for different HB ratings depending on thickness.

If the manufacturer doesn’t provide the nuanced info then one has to assume the 
worst

Some years ago, I sought to see the differences between the ratings, V0, V1, 
and V2.  The V stands for a test of a vertical oriented specimen.  HB stands 
for a test of horizontal burning oriented specimen.  As I recall, the HB rating 
was based on the rate of burn, less than 40 mm per minute, for the horizontal 
oriented specimen.



HB material burns until it is consumed.  V-rated material self-extinguishes at 
some time after ignition.



Based on UL 94, I put together the attached chart to determine the V0, V1, and 
V2 differences.  Note that the only difference between V1 and V2 is that V2 has 
flaming drops.
