I’m not sure how long ago Amazon stopped carrying lithium cells but I needed some for a project and tried to buy from what looked like the highest quality vendor, not just based on price. Hard to tell on an online store who is good or bad especially when you don’t recognize any names. The size I needed were not 18650s so harder to find a name brand. Even the 18650s on Amazon I’m not sure if they are counterfeit name brand batteries, because in the 18650 size you can find major manufacturer’s batteries. The cells were shipped to me in an unmarked bag with no UN shipping marks or information at all. No indication to the shippers that there were lithium ion batteries in the package. The origin shipper was the China Post Office. Considering how fast I got it direct from China it came by air. I guess the air carriers can’t screen every unmarked package. Hope they weren’t onboard a passenger plane from China. I x-rayed the cells at work to convince myself they were properly assembled and that the quality was good before I used them. Most consumers do not have that option and I am certain that the folks assembling large quantities of after-market battery packs on their kitchen tables in NYC don’t care. That was my limited one off experience so the problems seen in NYC do not surprise me in the least. As far as I recall, Amazon has taken down this type of products from their websites and asked for test reports and DoC. UL also supported the creation of a new set of standards for this type of product. Are the current regulatory and compliance standards ineffective to bring safe products into the market?
