A few facts for those reading who don¹t know much about the EMC certification process.
1. It was started in the late 80s due to concerns of NAVAIR about the quality of EMC engineering provided by their contractors. At the time, it was predicted that NAVAIR and other DoD entities would be requiring NARTE certification of EMC engineers and technicians as a condition of employment by their contractors. I expect, but do not know/recall, that at least NAVAIR required certification of their EMC personnel, and tried to enforce on their contractors, as well. I do not recall any other DoD entity actually requiring the certification. 2. There was considerable debate about how rigorous the certification process should be. In the mid-70s, the TEMPEST world instituted rigorous testing: both written and a measurement that required finding a real TEMPEST signal. The end result, in addition to well-qualified personnel, was a deficit of available folks, which drove up the cost of qualified TEMPEST personnel. Big time. Anyway, they were determined to not repeat that experience with EMC. For one thing, they grandfathered in existing EMC folks with ten year¹s experience, myself included. 3. I have kept up both my engineer and technician certifications ever since, on the perhaps superstitious basis that if I ever let them lapse, then is when I would find a need for them. It isn¹t obvious that people whose careers have been largely or totally in the commercial world would see any benefit from the NARTE certification process. The original ³need² was driven by DoD, and while NARTE attempted to broaden their prospective customer base by inventing all manner of new certifications, that was not customer-driven at all. Agreed Ghery - I mistakenly did not grandfather in when I had the opportunity and have not got the iNarte cert. I have the same experiences as you. Having said that: What I have found is that, outside of the rote testing and management of the compliance discipline, the role of the EMC Engineer is less well defined and the iNarte cert would add some credibility to the technical offerings. One time I was offeriig technical input and an engineer called it "crackpot theories" . I wear the moniker proudly!
