That's it. As explained previously, I'm not against the idea, but it would break existing documents containing "\[...\]" in the middle of a line, even though it is valid LaTeX. In any case, you will not get total LaTeX conformance. Anyway, I can't see any technical limitation to your suggestion. So we might as well ask the ML. I'll write a consultative poll about it.
