Maybe you need to define the `smtpmail-smtp-server' variable? The following provides fairly simple step-by-step instructions for configuring gnus to work with gmail. http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/GnusGmail Gnus provides so many options that it can be daunting to configure. However a simple configuration (just reading and writing email) should be simple to configure (and should end up with a short <20 line configuration). The trick is to avoid including the sophisticated fancy extra options until *after* you have the basics working.
