I am reposting an earlier bug report with a slightly different subject because this appears to be a serious problem not confined to aquamacs on macos. I have triggered the crash on both windows and mac emacs and provided a minimal, complete example to reproduce the problem. It seems likely to be a more general problem with handling overlays in Emacs 24. I am happy to provide any more details required to debug.
