Further investigation shows beheaviour depends on emacs version. On Suse 11.0 / emacs 22.2.1
I can C-u C-c C-c in the first table an the TBLFM is applied as expected. On Suse 11.1 / emacs 22.3.1 I get the result shown. It had worked on this machine, too, until a few days ago. My .emacs files, org-mode version and org files are identical.
