That makes a lot of sense. If emphasis markup behavior becomes more
intuitive, it would certainly help avoid some persistent
misunderstandings. I should probably take some time to reflect on this
issue as well.

That's good, but if I am not mistaken, we are already using ?|, i.e., \c|.
