Well, when I removed the .elc files, so I could attempt to debug it, it worked fine.
Maybe I'll recompile, and maybe I'll just leave it alone. It works fast enough for me without being compiled. Maybe I had an old .elc file that never got overwritten. Whatever, sorry for the false alarm.
