I did some more digging through my notes and found "D results in KPA500 displaying MCU LOAD. Recovery from accidental D requires rear power off, rear power on, then front panel power press".
Accidental sending of D does not seem to explain the KPA500 powering up with LCD test pattern. Reload fixed the problem but I still don't understand what caused it.
