I’ve used my K3 to drive my smaller external amplifier during CW contests such
as FD with 100 watts output, I found setting up to save the K3 for high rate
TXing exchanges at a lower duty cycle and stress so 500+Qs will keep full power
as distributed at a cooler configuration W1QS

"When I first connected the KAT to my system using the instructions give to me
by Rob at Elecraft the KAT goes into Bypass upon power-up. What is wrong?"

Why do you assume anything is wrong?

Bypass Mode, Auto mode with Bypass state, and MAN mode with Bypass state are
all valid KAT500 conditions and not necessarily indicative of any problem.

I'll avoid the admonishment to RTFM since the KAT500 User's Guide is still at
Revision D1, August 15, 2019.  This predates the firmware change that allows
BYP LED to be lit at the same time as AUTO or MAN LED.

If BYP is lit together with AUTO or MAN it simply means the tuner is in BYPASS
state which is electrically identical (as far as the RF path is concerned) to
BYP mode.

Thanks for your input Dick. I do have all those items set up in my K3 and it
and the amp have been running fine for many years. On the KPA1500 GroupsIO
page, someone who had this problem suggested that the protection diodes on the
input circuit to the KPA may be bad.  He fixed it by buying new diodes and
putting them in.  I also checked out the amp using low power (5W) from the K3
and the KPA still goes into input over-power mode (fault 60) with no sign of
any power surge from the K3, so I?m thinking the problem is in the KPA1500. The
K3 seems to run fine barefoot and when the amp is in bypass mode.  Now I?d love
to find a circuit diagram and part numbers for the amp so I can trace what?s
going on myself. Any other suggestions?
