That sounds like the switch on the encoder is going bad.  The encoder
switches and push buttons are all part of a matrix and "bad encoder
switches" is a known problem with earlier S/Ns.

All four of the encoders have been replaced in both of my early (~6xx
and ~14xx) K3s.
