Hi Mike,
Don't squirt Deoxit in the buttons.
Since you have an older K3 it most likely is the front panel pins where it 
attaches to the RF board. These pins on the first K3s were tin. There probably 
is some corrosion there.
Take the front panel off, clean the pins and replace the front panel and all 
will probably be fine.
Elecraft has an upgrade to gold pins for the older K3. The later K3 and all K3S 
radios have the gold pins.
