Using the CAT interface this way is great.  BUT you loose some decoding ability.  I run a K3 in RTTY contests, TX is FSK RX is 3 decoders, the K3 built in, mmtty and 2tone.  usually 2tone beats the other 2, with mmtty sometimes winning.  The K3 decoder misses the most.  You might want to try the audio from the USB codec to the computer and use some software.  I forget the good one for the Mac, but I sure some Mac user will know.

I think my only regret will be that I'll still need my separate FSK
interface, yeah yeah, AFSK, but if Elecraft didn't want us to use FSK, they
wouldn't have put it in the radio.

When I RTTY contest, I use a program that uses the CAT interface over USB to send and receive RTTY. That way I have no extra cables and am using the K3's RTTY encode/decode. I use RUMlogNG on a Mac. I don't know of any software for other platforms, but I assume it exists.
