The closest thing I have found to real RS232 ports for laptops are the Edgeport USB converters. I just treat them like a serial port and they seem to work in every way like a real serial port. I use an 8 port in the shack and a 4 when portable. Prices have gone up I hear,I paid about $70 for the pair off of Ebay.
