Bruce, Of course you can reinstall to re-partition your disk, it's the easiest way for an empty install. If you're unsure whether re-partitioning would meet your future needs, you should look at LVM (logical volume management). It allows to resize existing filesystems. To install *ubuntu on LVM one have to use alternate CD.
