I had a similar issue as my laptops are widescreen...1440x900 and 1280x800. What works best for me is to manually edit the xorg.conf file. Go to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and scroll down....find the section near the bottom on "monitors" and see where the resolutions are displayed...something like this...
"1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" there will be several for each color range...8 bit, 16 bit, etc simply add the resolution you want to use as the highest one....works for me...YMMV PS.
