note that the officiall CD we ship through shipit is the install CD, not the live CD, it has a lot more options. the above looks like you are installing from the liveCD (which in fact does only a workstation install ) and it seems you are facing: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bug/68245 which is sadly very hard to reproduce since it apparently only occurs on occasion as you saw in your tests as well... ciao oli
