Hi Chris,
Welcome to EDI.
For the most part each retailer or company within an industry uses a slight
variation
of the ASN for their own purposes - so the first thing to do is to define
who your trading partners are
then get EDI implementation guidelines from them to determine your
requirements.
If your customers/trading partners are the grocery retailers such as
Wal*Mart/Sam's Club,
Kroger, Safeway, etc. you'll have variations on one basic ASN structure. If
you sell to a larger dairy company
such as Knudsen or a private label for a grocery chain, then your structure
will be somewhat different
as you are supplying tank cars of product vs quarts & gallons.
The ASN is a hierarchal pyramid structure with HL levels.
A retail grocery ASN might have a
HL 'S'hipment level
HL 'O'rder level
HL 'T'are (pallet) and/or 'P'ack (carton) levels
one per pallet, one per carton, repeated several times.
and HL 'I'tem levels defining the items in each carton
Under each HL level are other EDI segments defining product codes, dates,
carton serial numbers bar coded,
weights, carrier freight information, PO#, etc.
If you sell bulk it might look like this
HL Shipment
HL Order
HL Container (bulk trailer for example)
HL Item i.e. 1000 gallons of
whole milk

Subject: [EDI-L] Create ASN 856
Hi,
I'm new to this form and new to EDI. I would like to obtain some information
on how to create ASN 856 EDI specifications for the company I work for. I've
scoured the internet for any general specifications for ASNs but have only
found ones that are tailored to a specific company. Could I use one of their
specifications and base mine on it or is there a way I can create it from
scratch? This will be the first time creating such a document.
Looking forward to any responses that can start me off on the right foot.
