*Duties and Responsibilities: *This is a 12-month tenure-accruing position
that will be 60% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station) and 40%
extension (Florida Cooperative Extension Service), available in the Fort
Lauderdale Research and Education Center (FLREC), Institute of Food and
Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), at the University of Florida.  This
assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit.  Duties
will include development of a productive, interdisciplinary, extramurally
funded research program with an emphasis on palm and woody plant
horticulture in the built landscape. The candidate will need to maintain a
global perspective to be prepared for the introduction of new plant
materials from other locations as well as to deal with sea-level rise
mitigation issues in the landscape. The specific research program may
include palm nutrition, palm physiology, best management practices for
palms in the landscape, interactions between palm horticultural practices
and disease and insect management, and evaluation of new palm species.
Extension responsibilities will include maintaining and updating education
programs for Extension agents, stakeholders and the public on the
identification and management of palm nutritional deficiencies,
continuation of the FLREC palm school and maintenance of online tools for
identifying and mitigating palm problems in the landscape. The incumbent
will provide proactive leadership, training, and assistance to county
faculty. Tenure will accrue in the Department of Environmental Horticulture.
The faculty member will actively participate in undergraduate and graduate
education by chairing graduate committees, serving on graduate committees,
supervising thesis and dissertation research, supervising undergraduate
research, and publishing the results with his/her graduate students.
Faculty are encouraged to participate in professional development
activities related to teaching and advising and may teach courses and
seminars.  The faculty member will actively seek extramural funding to
support his/her program.  The faculty member will engage in Extension
activities in his or her program area.



Because of the IFAS land-grant mission, all faculty are expected to be
supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas—Research, Teaching and
Extension—regardless of the assignment split specified in the position
description.



*Qualifications:*

*Required:*

A doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) in horticulture, environmental
horticulture, botany or a closely related discipline is required.  Candidates
should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication,
interpersonal relationships, and procurement of extramural funding.  Candidates
must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system.  Candidates
must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity,
global involvement, and accountability. The applicant should have skills in
basic horticulture, botany, plant propagation, plant physiology, and/or
horticultural landscape management. Preference will be given to candidates
with a strong background in landscape management of palms.

Postdoctoral experience is desirable.

is a unit in the Institute of Food and Agriculture Sciences at the
University of Florida and has diverse teaching, research and extension
education programs with 18 faculty members located on the Davie campus, and

people, which includes approximately 900 faculty and 1200 support personnel
located in Gainesville and throughout the state.  IFAS, one of the nation’s
largest agricultural and natural resources research and education
organizations, is administered by a Senior Vice President and four deans:
the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the Dean for
Extension and Director of the Florida Cooperative Extension Service, the
Dean for Research and Director of the Florida Agricultural Experiment
Station, and the Dean for the College of Veterinary Medicine.  UF/IFAS also
engages in cooperative work with Florida A&M University in Tallahassee.
