http://sesync.org/opportunities/research-education-workshops/graduate-student-workshop-on-socio-environmental Request for Proposals The National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC) invites applications for the third Socio- Environmental Synthesis Graduate Workshop to be held June 13-15, 2016, in Annapolis, Maryland. Goals of the workshop are to: • Energize and engage graduate students in innovative socio-environmental synthesis research • Support graduate students through skill-building, networking, and research training opportunities • Introduce and prepare graduate students for the upcoming graduate research opportunity at SESYNC We seek currently enrolled first or second year PhD students from the social, natural, and computational sciences with interests in bridging disciplines and synthesis research. As part of the highly interactive workshop, attendees will hear from noted scholars and practitioners, participate in discussions on socio-environmental synthesis, decision making, and actionable outcomes, and attend sessions on collaboration and team science. To help prepare participants for the upcoming research opportunity at SESYNC, specifically the Graduate Pursuits, the workshop will also provide graduate students with the opportunity to draft scientific proposals and immediately gain expert feedback. Many who attended the first two workshops were successful in securing funding for graduate synthesis research at SESYNC. Participants are thus ecouraged to use the workshop to develop relationships with peers from around the world and across disciplines, and to ultimately form interdisciplinary teams to jointly apply in the fall for SESYNC’s next round of Graduate Pursuits. Costs & Travel There is no cost to attend, but space is limited. Travel to our facilities, accommodations, and food expenses for workshop attendees will be provided by SESYNC in accordance with our travel policies. To Apply The deadline for workshop applications is May 8, 2016, at 11:59pm Eastern Standard Time (EST). Application materials must be submitted as one PDF document, including: C.V.; statement of research interest and socio- environmental synthesis goals; and doctoral advisor’s letter of recommendation. Participants will be selected based on background, interests, and potential for socio-environmental synthesis.
