Postdoctoral fellowship in environmental monitoring and research

A postdoctoral fellow is sought to join a new collaboration in
environmental monitoring and research between the University of Alberta and
the Alberta Environmental Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting Agency (
www.aemera.org). The postdoctoral fellow will work to understand the
potential impacts of oil sands development on freshwater resources in
northeastern Alberta. The research will focus on using long-term water
chemistry datasets from regional lakes and rivers to understand potential
natural and anthropogenic drivers of recent limnological change. The
primary dataset is related to a monitoring program on acid-sensitive lakes,
including acid deposition, nutrient cycling, hydrologic change, trace
element biogeochemical cycling, and aquatic invertebrates (zooplankton).
This work will directly support data evaluation and reporting requirements
associated with the Joint Canada-Alberta oil sands monitoring programs, and
the postdoctoral fellow will collaborate closely with scientists from both
academia and government.

The successful candidate will work in the Department of Earth and
Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta,
Canada) under the supervision of Dr. Colin Cooke ([email protected]). The
ideal candidate will have a PhD in environmental science, aquatic
biogeochemistry, hydrology, aquatic ecology, or a related field. Ideal
qualities include familiarity with ambient environmental monitoring in
Alberta, experience in multi-disciplinary research efforts, strong
organizational and communication skills, and a demonstrated track record in
the peer-reviewed literature. The initial appointment will be for one year,
potentially renewable for an additional year. The start date for the
position is negotiable but ideally before January, 2016. Applications
should be sent as a single PDF by email and should include: a cover letter
highlighting accomplishments as they relate to the position, a CV, and the
names and contact information for three references.
