The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the Bureau of Land
Management, is recruiting a Recreation Technician to assist BLM Outdoor
Recreation Planners with facility and trail planning and maintenance,
coordinating with volunteers and private land owners, transportation
planning, field studies, recreation-use inventories, and serving as camp
host during summer months. The position may include compiling and
interpreting information; researching reference materials; writing reports,
and assisting a resource team in interpreting and deciphering types of uses
and other resource concerns on roads and trails. Preferred candidates will
have experience in operating government-owned 4WD and all-terrain vehicles,
GIS mapping and use of a hand held GPS, use of heavy equipment, trail and
facility maintenance, and trail development. Some work is performed in an
outdoor environment that ranges from very cold and wet to very hot and dry.
This work may require heavy physical exertion over steep, difficult terrain
and uneven or rocky surfaces, and it may include bending, crouching, and
stooping, stretching, reaching, and similar activities. Camping for
consecutive nights in remote, primitive sites may be required. Work may be
required on weekends. This position will provide experience working with a
BLM professional on public lands and will aid in preparation for a career
in public lands recreation management.

Timeframe:
• Annual appointment beginning in mid-October 2015
• Generally 40 hours per week; work may be required on weekends

Compensation:
• Living Allowance: $24,200
• AmeriCorps Education Award*: $ 5,645
• Health Insurance

*The AmeriCorps Education Award may be used for past, present or future
education experiences, including payment of qualifying federal student
loans. Lone forbearance and accrued interest payment on qualifying student
loans is also available.

Location:
The BLM Redding Field Office is located in the northern BLM Northern CA
District in the vicinity of many outdoor recreation opportunities,
including fishing, mountain biking, hiking/backpacking, and
skiing/snowboarding. Redding is located between Shasta-Trinity and Lassen
National Forests and is on the I-5 corridor, making points in Oregon and
central/southern California easily accessible.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in recreation/wilderness management, natural resources,
or equivalent coursework and field experience;
• Experience collecting field data and/or following established field
collection protocols;
• Strong communication skills and experience in volunteer coordination and
in providing visitor services, environmental education, outreach, and/or
interpretation;
• Ability to read and navigate using topographic maps and compass;
• Experience with use of hand-held GPS units and with GIS mapping;
• Familiarity with trail development and experience in trail and facility
maintenance;
• Motivated, self-starter, detail oriented, and possess good organizational
skills;
• Ability to camp and work in remote locations;
• Willingness to work alone or in small groups to support the mission of
BLM and GBI, and accomplish targeted goals and objectives;
• Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments and traverse
uneven terrain;
• Clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with ability to safely
operate 4WD and all-terrain vehicles on unimproved roads; and
• Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal
resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education
Award (limit of four in a lifetime or equivalent of two full-time awards),
and (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR) and federal
criminal background checks.

The successful applicant must complete a Department of Interior (DOI)
Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to BLM human resources
indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed
prior to beginning position.
