Position Description    
The job duties include performing a botanical assessment of the CLBJ for 
monarch butterfly habitat. 
The survey will focus on documenting larval and nectar sources for the monarch 
and a general survey 
for other forbs on the CLBJ. Recording monarch butterfly and caterpillar 
sightings will also be 
required. Plants will need to be identified to species. Graminoids will not 
generally be included in the 
survey. Seed collection from 1-2 species of Asclepias will also be 
accomplished. Other botanical work 
may be assigned as needed.

Job hazards include high heat, lightning, poisonous plants, venomous snakes, 
and pests such as 
ticks, chiggers, and fire ants.  The climate in North Texas has very warm 
summers.  They average 10-
12 days above 100 degrees with most other days in the mid-90s with moderate 
humidity. Most days 
are windy and afternoon thunderstorms are common.
In Decatur, rental homes average $900-$1,300 a month and government housing is 
not available. 
Housing is available near the Caddo at Clymer Meadow Preserve located in nearby 
Celeste, TX. 

The community of Decatur, Texas is 38 miles north of the Fort Worth, Texas 
metropolitan area and 
less than an hour from the DFW International Airport. The population as of 2010 
was 6,042, an 
increase of 25% since 2000. The area is a combination of rural and urban 
communities which make 
Decatur’s community culture “out of the ordinary” but an ideal place to call 
home.  Decatur holds 
dearly to its western heritage as a stop on the famed Chisholm Trail.  Decatur 
is the county seat for 
Wise County. The county’s current population is 59,127. Agriculture and the oil 
and gas industry are 
the biggest private industries today in the Decatur area but several other 
major employers make their 
home in Decatur.  Other industries are within a 30-minute commute to Denton, 
Dallas, or Fort Worth 
without the hassle of big city traffic. 
Traffic problems, violent crime and fear are virtually nonexistent. Children 
are safe without having to 
sacrifice a quality education. Families are moving here because of 
award-winning schools and an 
outstanding regional health facility. Churches of most denominations are 
located in Decatur and Wise 
County. Decatur is home to several major hotel chains with numerous restaurants 
and fast food 
chains. Decatur has experienced phenomenal growth in the past several years. 
Employment Requirements
-       Position open to US citizens only
-       Minimum of a bachelors degree in botany, ecology, or related fields
-       Previous experience with dichotomous keys 
-       Knowledge of the flora of Texas
-       Experience with GPS, Microsoft Office suite
-       High level of organizational skill; ability to self-motivate and work 
independently, and 
sometimes alone.
-       Ability to work well with others, and as a team
-       Valid driver’s license
