The Savannah River Ecology Laboratory and the Odum School of Ecology at the 
University of Georgia invite applications for an academic-year, tenure-
track position as an Assistant Professor of Ecosystem Health.  The 
successful applicant will be located at the Savannah River Ecology 
Laboratory in Aiken, S.C. and will report to the Director of the Savannah 
River Ecology Laboratory (0.75 EFT) and to the Dean of the Odum School of 
Ecology (0.25 EFT). This position is part of an ongoing cluster hire in 
Natural Resources Sustainability led by the Savannah River Ecology 
Laboratory, the Odum School of Ecology and the Warnell School of Forestry 
and Natural Resources at the University of Georgia.
Responsibilities:  The successful candidate is expected to develop an 
extramurally funded and internationally recognized research program focused 
on the role of environmental stressors (e.g., radionuclides, heavy metals, 
other contaminants, or pathogens) in the degradation of ecosystem health 
and function (including individuals, populations or ecosystems).  It is 
expected that a portion of the successful candidate’s research will be 
conducted on the Savannah River Site.  The research program will be 
complemented by contributions to instruction on the main UGA campus in 
Athens, GA as well as contributions to Maymester courses on the Savannah 
River Site in Aiken, SC.  Specific courses to be taught will be based on 
instructional needs and candidate expertise.  The successful candidate also 
will be involved in graduate education via advising of graduate students 
and service on graduate student committees.  Professional service to groups 
such as state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, 
professional societies, and the public also is expected, in addition to 
interaction with colleagues at UGA and the broader academic community.
Qualifications:  Applicants must have a PhD in an appropriate field 
(Ecology, Biology, Ecotoxicology, or related discipline), with demonstrated 
potential for research and teaching proficiency.  The candidate should have 
demonstrated expertise in radioecology, ecotoxicology, systems ecology or 
disease ecology and clear evidence of disciplinary skill sets needed to 
develop a rigorous, extramurally funded research program.  Preference will 
be given to candidates having a record of excellence in research, teaching, 
and service commensurate with time since degree. Applicants with 
demonstrated expertise in the use of modelling and/or molecular tools to 
address issues of ecosystem health are especially encouraged to apply.
Savannah River Ecology Laboratory: The successful candidate will be located 
at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory, a research unit of the University 
of Georgia located on the 300 mi2 Savannah River Site, a Department of 
Energy facility near Aiken, SC (http://srel.uga.edu). With a staff of over 
70 faculty, postdocs, research professionals, technicians, and graduate 
students, the laboratory pursues basic and applied research at multiple 
levels of ecological organization, from atoms to ecosystems. SREL also 
provides opportunities for graduate and undergraduate research training, 
and service to the community through environmental outreach. Throughout its 
60+ year history SREL has strived to acquire and communicate knowledge that 
contributes to sound ecological stewardship.
Odum School of Ecology:  The tenure home of the successful candidate will 
be in the Odum School of Ecology at the main UGA campus in Athens, GA. The 
University of Georgia (www.uga.edu) is a land/sea grant institution 
comprised of 16 schools and colleges, and is located <90 miles from 
Atlanta. Enrollment is about 34,000 undergraduate, graduate, and 
professional students. The Odum School of Ecology is a unique stand-alone 
college dedicated to a broad and integrative view of ecology (for more
