Attention Botanists, Wildlife Biologists and other Life Scientists:

Do you need college credits in Field Botany to upgrade your skill set but can’t
fit a typical class schedule into your work routine? Can you take 6 days off
in late June to get an educational experience of a lifetime? Then consider
enrolling in “Field Botany of Southwest Oregon and Northern California”
(BOT203A) at Umpqua Community College! This 4 credit hybrid lab science class
is fully accredited by the Oregon University System will be offered for the
third time during Spring Term 2014 beginning March 31st. The class will be led
for the 3rd time by Ken Carloni, Ph.D. who has over 30 years of experience
botanizing in the region.

The course begins with a series of online modules on botanical terminology,
regional plant family characteristics, and other web-delivered content, and
will culminate in a hands-on, 6 day tour of this botanically rich region on an
innovative sleeper coach provided by world-famous Green Tortoise Adventure
Tours (www.greentortoise.com<http://www.greentortoise.com>). The tour will
depart from UCC on Tuesday, June 17th and will visit unique plant communities
in the Siskiyou Mts., the Smith River, the Redwoods, Trinidad State Beach, the
Trinity River, Mt. Lassen NP, Rising River Ranch, McArthur-Burney Falls SP,
Lava Beds NM, Crater Lake NP, and waterfalls along the North Umpqua River,
returning to UCC on Sunday, June 22nd. In six days we will experience the
grandeur and awe-inspiring diversity in one of the botanically richest regions
of the world from the Redwood Coast to the Cascade Crest.

The fee for the tour is $675 and covers all food, parks and campsites. And UCC
offers the best tuition deal in the state -- the total cost of tuition,
transportation and meals for BOT203A (~$1078) is less than the tuition alone
would cost at one of Oregon’s major universities. If you don’t need the
credits but just want to brush up on your botany and experience the
world-renowned beauty and diversity of the region, you can simply sign up for
the tour for $680 as a UCC Community Education class.
