SapFlow & Climate Station Technician Job ID: 13470 Project Name: UHH/HI Coop Studies Unit(HCSU) Full/Part Time: Full-Time Regular/Temporary: Regular Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo (UHH) Pacific Islands Climate Science Center, Hawaii Cooperative Studies Unit (HCSU), located in Hilo, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. *MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:* $2,459.00. *DUTIES: *Conducts work as part of the UH Hilo Pacific Climate Science Center effort focused on climate science research. Helps with the installation and conducts all maintenance, calibration, and repair of a sapflow system for two Hawaiian tree species found in native-dominated Hawaiian forests. Support sapflow measurements, performs installation, routine maintenance, field calibration, and repair of scientific instruments associated with infrastructure at climate station sites for an existing extramurally-funded project throughout Hawai‘i. *PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: * Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Ecology, Biology, Natural Resource Management, Geography, Meteorology, Engineering, or a related field. * EXPERIENCE: * At least three (3) years of experience in natural resources research, with skills in sample collection, data and sample processing and analysis methods, and managing complex equipment in the field and lab. Experience should include (but not limited to) use of Campbell Scientific Datalogger (or equivalent systems), instrumentation, ecological data collection/management, figure preparation, scientific writing, and data manipulation. *ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:* Knowledge should include principles of botany and ecology, general methods involved in gathering and recording field data for research and management projects (including the use of computers to download data under field conditions), the ecology of Hawaiian forests, and the basic principles of field research, including ability to assess readings and measurements taken, tests executed, observations made, work completed, samples collected, etc. Strong oral and written communications skills. Demonstrated ability to draft scientific reports. Must possess computer skills including proficiency in datalogger software and ability to use advanced functions in Microsoft Excel. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Ability to drive off-road vehicles. *PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: * Able to hike over difficult terrain for prolonged periods of time. Not acrophobic since job requires periodic scaling a 100 foot tower (training, regular supervision, and oversight of equipment and protocols provided by the USDA Forest Service). Able to lift and carry heavy equipment weighing up to fifty (50) pounds. Able to travel inter-island. *SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:* Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Ecology, Biology, Natural Resource Management, Geography, Meteorology, Engineering, or a related field. Experience in climatestation installation, maintenance and programming, or equivalent type of field sensors. Experience with making or installing sapflow probes. Experience using databases and algorithms to manage data and process for quality assurance / quality control.
