Initial appointment as the Henry Chandler Cowles Lecturer in Environmental Studies will be for one year, renewal for a second year may be possible, contingent on funding. The successful candidate will have completed a PhD in some aspect of environmental studies within the past five years, will have interests encompassing broad issues of social-environmental theory and empirical engagement, and will have developed a substantial interdisciplinary research program. PGE is an interdisciplinary, interdivisional program located in the Center for International Studies. In addition to an Environmental Studies B.A. major and minor program, PGE initiatives include the graduate Workshop on the Global Environment, conferences, lecture series and other events, and public outreach. The Henry Chandler Cowles Lecturer will be expected to co-organize the Workshop on the Global Environment, participate in PGE sponsored activities, and engage in independent scholarly research. He or she will also contribute to the Environmental Studies core curriculum, develop and teach three new courses the first year (one of which may be team taught) and two the second year, and advise undergraduate theses. He or she will also be expected to organize a sponsored, interdisciplinary, public conference on a significant environmental topic during their appointment. The annual salary will be $45,000 plus full benefits and a small research allowance. The effective date for this appointment will be September 1, 2011. The Program on the Global Environment has a well-developed track record as a training ground for scholars in the initial stages of their academic careers. These scholars contribute important breadth and depth to our curriculum and scholarly program. They are active mentors to our undergraduates and significant participants in the larger intellectual life of the University.
