You might (if you haven't already) check out the British Ecological Society.  
Student membership is nominal, and it's a much smaller, more intimate group of 
ecologists that are doing work throughout the world.  I met with a rep from the 
society at the last ESA meeting and he has pretty much sold me on joining.  Not 
only does membership mean you have access to travel grants for the annual 
meeting, but you would also be opened up to grants for research funding.  Good
