Jim, I'm sorry you had a bad experience working with the USGS. There will
always be problems when work involves working closely and living with the
same people for weeks at a time and it takes a special tolerance to be able
to do that and having the right boss does make it easier. Now the problem I
have with your email is that you're lumping all of USGS (specifically the
Biological Resources Division) into the same category (work experience
wise). Your job was based in Las Vegas, NV, this one is headquartered in
Santa Barbara, CA, and I'm assuming with a different boss (since I don't
know who the "Pill" is). Also the work area is different, Central Nevada vs.
Southern, and for me no area is more beautiful than Central NV, with the
jagged peaks of the Toiyabe, Mt Jefferson in the Toquima with their Bighorn
Sheep, and the Aspen covered slopes of Table Mountain in the Monitors where
big Elk abound. The job is also different, Birds vs. Plants.

I work for the USGS-BRD in Reno, NV. We conduct research mainly on
threatened and endangered desert fishes. We also spend a lot of time in the
field and we've had crews that have gotten along well together and a few
crews where they're ready to strangle each other when they get back. I've
also had this as my own experience working with the Forest Service and State
Parks, very few things in life work out perfectly. My office will be
advertising for a Fishery Biologist or two in the near future though I can't
guarantee that everyone will get along, I will guarantee that you will get
some valuable work (fishery) experience and visit some of the more beautiful
places in Nevada.
