WEBINAR ALERT: Climate Change and Labour: Ex-GKN for Future

Climate Change and Labour: Ex-GKN for Future

In the webinar, we will discuss a bottom-up initiative started in 2021 by
workers who lost their jobs when the former GKN factory suddenly decided to
close down.

Over the past three years, the workers have organized several strikes in
convergence with the climate movement and decided to engage in a bottom-up
ecological transition of the factory, which was in the automotive sector, into
a new tissue for the production of solar panels and cargo-bikes. They've
implemented a very ambitious plan with the involvement of academics, and the
newly formed cooperative 'ex-GKN For Future' has launched a solidarity campaign
and issued one million euros in shares to promote bottom-up reindustrialisation
through a 'popular shareholding' initiative.

This case opened a public debate on the possibility of bottom-up ecological
transition projects, which aim to democratise the transition and define an
industrial reconversion based on social rather than market needs.
