*SOEST POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER (CORAL REEFS ECOLOGY) **– ID# **225109**.*

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position in Coral Reef
Ecological Oceanography with the Silbiger Lab in the School of Ocean and
Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Uehiro Center for the Advancement of
Oceanography, Department of Oceanography, located in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi.
Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs,
satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with
applicable Federal/State laws.

*MONTHLY SALARY RANGE:*  $6,000 - $6,666.67/Mon.

*DUTIES:  *Develops and leads independent and collaborative research
projects. Coordinates with collaborators and lab staff/students to develop
and conduct original research to advance coral reef ecosystem sciences,
including data collection, analysis, and writing peer reviewed manuscripts.
Drives to field sites to transport samples and equipment. Leads fieldwork
in Okinawa, Japan and Hawaiʻi, USA at the early stages of a long-term
research project, including independently conducting research related to
benthic ecology and ecosystem metabolism, set-up and deployment of
instrumentation related to coastal oceanography, and operation of
laboratory equipment for carbonate chemistry analyses. Leads SCUBA and
snorkel-based field work projects that include standard coral reef benthic
ecology and deploying sensors for various physicio-chemical parameters of
seawater such as temperature, pH, and salinity and collecting discrete
samples. Leads laboratory analyses for various biogeochemical parameters
including carbonate chemistry parameters. Data Management and analysis
using the statistical program R and GitHub. Works collaboratively with
students and technicians within the Silbiger Lab and other collaborating
labs to advance program goals. Leads and writes manuscripts for
peer-reviewed literature. Provides oversight, guidance, and mentorship for
students, volunteers, and interns in the field, laboratory and office.

*PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: *

*EDUCATION*

PhD from an accredited college or university in Marine Biology,
Oceanography, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field.

*EXPERIENCE*

One to three (1-3) years of experience in field research related to
oceanography or marine ecology in coral reef ecosystems.

*KNOWLEDGE*

Strong knowledge of coral reef ecosystems, marine ecology and using
instrumentation typically used in coastal oceanography and biogeochemistry
research.

*ABILITIES & SKILLS*

Strong ability to problem-solve, work both independently and as part of a
diverse team, speak and write effectively. Ability to work in remote field
locations for weeks to months at a time. Excellent scientific writing
skills with a proven track record of publications. Must be SCUBA certified
(NAUI, PADI, etc.) and meet the standards established by the University of
Hawai‘i’s and/or program’s diver certification process (which meets the
standards set by the American Academy of Underwater Science) and hold the
current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen
Administration, and maintain throughout duration of employment.  Must
possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job
is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to
Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration
of employment. *Post Offer/Employment Condition:* Must be able to complete
the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks
from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.

*PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS*

Ability to lift and carry at least fifty (50) pounds in the field. Ability
to spend several continuous hours in field and laboratory settings.

*SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  *

Experience with coding in R is highly desired. Familiarity with running
mesocosm/aquarium based research projects.
