Quebec City. An amazing city to explore (most european of north american
cities), and so many opportunities for recreation before or after the course.
So, see below for how to join us for the week of 15-20 June!

International graduate course in functional traits offered in Quebec, Canada,
June 15-20th, 2025
Special 10th anniversary edition

The functional trait approach is widely used today in ecology, both to more
precisely characterize biodiversity, understand community assembly,
interactions among species, ecosystem functioning and applied in land
management such as ecological restoration, agroecology and forest management.
This summer school will familiarize you with this approach including theory,
quantitative analyses, data management and concrete applications. This is our
10th anniversary edition (formerly schools in Quebec, France, Colombia, Czech
Republic and Spain, starting in 2009).

Who? Students from MSc, PhD programs, postdoctoral fellows.
The course overlaps with a thematic workshop which is open to a wider audience
and will be announced very soon. The course can be credited for local students
(3 credits).

Objectives

- Present concepts and theory related to plant functional traits, including
historical perspective

- Analysis of traits at organismal, community and ecosystem levels (including
relationship to ecosystem functions)

- Present the leaf economics spectrum, root economics space, integrated
phenotype

- Presentation of available data banks and their correct use: intro to
ecoinformatics

- Workshop discussions with a wide group of researchers, with the objective of
developing several manuscripts around new perspectives in trait-based ecology
