M.S. Graduate Student in Marine Ecology and Aquaculture Applications for graduate study to the Master’s Degree program in Biology at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) are invited for students interested in an interdisciplinary project in marine ecology/aquaculture and the social sciences. The graduate student will be supported by a funded Graduate Research Assistantship position for 2 years at $22,500 per year plus a 1-year tuition waiver.
The project aims to apply principles of ecological resilience for use in marine macroalgal aquaculture systems to evaluate their potential to build capacity for resilience in the surrounding local ecosystem and to create opportunities and enrichment for under-represented groups, thereby enhancing resilience of the local socioeconomic coastal community. Ideally, candidate students will have interests in (1) marine ecology and aquaculture, (2) collaborating with a team of interdisciplinary scientists at CSUN (Drs. Janet Kübler, Steve Dudgeon, Andrew Ainsworth, Scott Applerouth) in marine ecology, molecular biology and the social sciences, (3) working with diverse groups of people, and (4) good quantitative skills (or desire to develop them). American Association of Underwater Scientists (AAUS) SCUBA diving certification, or willingness to acquire certification, is required. Willingness to develop skills in molecular biology and field ecology is highly desirable. Interested students should contact Drs. Janet Kübler or Steve Dudgeon immediately to learn about the project and must apply to the CSUN Graduate program in Biology by the February 15, 2025 application deadline. Applicants for graduate study must apply separately to both the Graduate School at CSUN and the CSUN Graduate program in the Department of Biology. Information about applying to the Graduate School at CSUN can be found at this link: https://www.csun.edu/graduate-studies Information about applying to the Master’s degree program in the Department of Biology can be found at this link: https://catalog.csun.edu/academics/biol/programs/ms-biology/ CSUN is a minority-serving institution (MSI) and Hispanic-serving institution (HSI) of ~37,000 students located in metropolitan Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley. The Department of Biology is dedicated to moving science toward a more diverse, inclusive and equitable discipline that is accessible to all. Students from groups under-represented in STEM disciplines are encouraged to apply.
