Ph.D. Assistantship at Oklahoma State University - Hyperspectral Remote Sensing
of Biodiversity

Description:
We are seeking a Ph.D. student for our recently NASA funded HI-GRASS (Holistic
Investigation of Grassland Systems across Scales) project. The Ph.D. student
will work with two other teams at Oklahoma State University and University of
Nebraska-Lincoln to integrate imaging spectroscopy or “hyperspectral remote
sensing” collected from unoccupied aircraft systems (UASs; a.k.a. drones),
airborne, and spaceborne platforms with in situ observations (e.g., plant
diversity, soil microbial and fungal diversity, animal telemetry) to uncover
the factors influencing grassland aboveground and belowground biodiversity.
Ideal target start date is May 2025. For full consideration, please apply by
January 20th, 2025.

Oklahoma State University is a Carnegie Tier-1 university with excellent
research facilities. Oklahoma State University is located in Stillwater, OK,
rated as the friendliest college town in the U.S. Because of its mid-continent
location that spans a broad expanse of habitats, Oklahoma has both prairie and
forest ecosystems that support an exceptional level of biodiversity.

Qualifications:

  * Master’s degree (at the time of appointment) in remote sensing or other
related fields
  * Programming is expected to be the core for remote sensing data analysis.
Therefore, having previous experience and knowledge on how to code (e.g.,
Python, R, MATLAB) is ideal.
  * Strong research or work experience in hyperspectral remote sensing
  * Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative setting
  * Excellent written and oral communication skills
  *   First-author peer-reviewed publications
  *   Background in statistical methods
  *   Enthusiastic about grasslands
  * Comfortable with fieldwork in remote settings

Other qualifications:

  * Familiarity with high performance computing
  *   FAA remote pilot license
  *   Familiarity with grassland ecosystems
