Department, Program & College Description:
The NREM Department is housed in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences,
which is dedicated to the Land Grant missions of teaching, research, and
extension. The Department is broad in scope, with ~375 undergraduate students
in Animal Ecology, ~80 students in Forestry, and >50 graduate students in
Fisheries Biology, Forestry, and Wildlife Ecology or in Interdepartmental
Graduate Programs with NREM faculty affiliations. The department houses the
U.S. Geological Survey’s Iowa Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit. In

Rod and Connie French Conservation Camp in western Montana as well as a
facility that could serve as an aviary and artificial ponds ~8 miles north of
the main ISU campus.

Global Resource Systems is an interdisciplinary undergraduate major in the
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and housed in the Department of
Horticulture. Students develop a core set of technical competencies in a
resource area selected from the majors, minors and certificates offered by
CALS. They complete a global internship and senior project related to their
resource specialization within the context of a world region. The undergraduate
experience culminates with a senior capstone course, where students work with
real-world clients to address global resource challenges. Multidisciplinary
themes are developed in the context of the physical, biological, and
socio-economic factors affecting global resource systems. Academic
service-learning programs are offered as semester-long and short term. GRS
faculty lead service-learning programs in Uganda, supported by the Center for
Sustainable Rural Livelihoods.
