The Conservation Research (CR) Program of the Institute for Applied Ecology (www.appliedeco.org) is seeking to hire a Full-time Research Technician with a diverse skill set to assist with multiple research and monitoring projects to support the conservation and recovery of rare plants and wildlife. The Technician will be based in Corvallis, Oregon. The Technician will spend substantial time in the field during the primary field season (approximately mid-April through July) coordinating and leading field crews. The rest of the year will be spent supporting occasional field work, managing data and field equipment, assisting with analyses and report writing, and preparing for the next field season. Projects are primarily in western Oregon, but additional projects routinely take place throughout other regions of the state and throughout the Pacific Northwest. *What you'll do* *Specific Responsibilities* - Work closely with project managers and independently to implement project-specific tasks, including: - Training, coordinating, and leading field crews. - Conducting botanical (and some wildlife and entomological) surveys, population monitoring, and plant community assessments. - Managing project data and ensuring quality control. - Conducting statistical analyses and contributing to report writing. - Manage the field supplies and electronic data collection resources of the CR Program. - Assist project managers with developing GIS projects and maps. - Assist with additional programmatic needs such as preparing an annual report, working in the greenhouse, or other assisting with other experiments. - Practice effective communication with and contribute to the success of the Conservation Research Program at IAE. *Qualifications* *Minimum Qualifications* - A minimum of three years of experience in plant ecology, or a related field. - Experience leading a field crew with minimal supervision. - Able to conduct independent creative problem solving. - Positive attitude and a commitment to maintaining a collaborative team environment. - Excellent oral and written communication skills. - Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. - Demonstrated proficiency with Esri suites (ArcGIS pro, Field Maps, and Survey123). - Ability to work long hours in adverse weather conditions with potential exposure to poison oak. Ability to hike up to 3 miles carrying a 40-pound pack and work in a bent-over/kneeling/sitting position for long periods of time. - Ability to complete tasks in a sometimes-noisy office setting with frequent interruptions. - Ability to remain in a stationary position, often sitting or standing for prolonged periods. - Able to navigate using aerial photos, compass, and mapping apps on a tablet or GIS. - Current U.S. driver’s license and acceptable driving record. *Required skills, abilities and experience* - Plant Species ID: Skilled in plant identification, demonstrated ability to learn new species and families, familiar with plant families and use of dichotomous keys, able to identify suite of target species. Familiarity with regional plant communities and habitat requirements for wildlife (including pollinators and grassland birds) desirable. Able to recognize a majority of forbs and common grasses in work areas via sight. - Monitoring: Implement existing monitoring layout and data collection protocols independently and troubleshoot common issues. - Data Management: Enter data using appropriate database software or other data storage system and independently perform quality control tasks, as well as importing/exporting data and designing simple queries to extract data. - GIS: Ability to make maps, conduct basic analysis, edit shapes, manage and update data in ArcGIS suites. *Preferred Qualifications* - Statistics: Understanding of univariate/nonparametric (t-test, ANOVA, Chi-square, Simple Regression/Correlation) statistical analyses. Ability to create graphs and tables that show statistical results using Excel and R. - Electronic Data Capture: Able to use and lead instruction of others in basic use of electronic data collection forms (typically on tablets). Able to troubleshoot issues with forms. - Peer Reviewed Publications: Ability to contribute writing of individual sections and/or conduct basic statistical analyses. *Cover Letter Instructions* In your cover letter please address the following questions: 1.
