Call it a stab in the dark, but try removing the PID file at:
/usr/local/var/run/dovecot/master.pid
Yes, that should do the trick (at least so as to get more informative
messages on next launch).
Currently, looks like as if dovecot hasn't been cleanly terminated
last time, before having the opportunity to remove its pid file.
James, did you have to abruptly shut down your box?
