Hi Peter, > I hate to state the obvious, (please forgive me if this is TOO > obvious), but did you upgrade to 9.04 as an interim step ? > > I would have tried going straight from 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS myself if > Ralph hadn't pointed out to me that Ubuntu explicitly state that it > won't work.
That must have been some other Ralph then as I've never thought any such thing. :-) I have pointed out in the past how I couldn't go from, e.g. 8.04 to 9.04 without upgrading through 8.10 first. But I've also said how I was pleased to see, having put the upgrade off for sufficiently long, that I could leap from 8.04 to 10.04 as they were both LTS. Now 10.10 is out I'll have to go 8.04 → 10.04 → 10.10. > Anyway, I recently upgraded my laptop via the Update Manager from 8.04 > to 9.04 then to 10.04 over the space of 2 - 3 days and everything went > very smoothly. That's the sequence you suggest above but it means you've missed 9.10 which *isn't* allowed or possible. 9.04 is non-LTS and the only upgrade path is 9.10 so you must either have done that too or leaped LTS to LTS. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes is a good description of what can be done, including listing the possibilities.
