That must have been some other Ralph then as I've never thought any such
thing.  :-)  I have pointed out in the past how I couldn't go from, e.g.
8.04 to 9.04 without upgrading through 8.10 first.  But I've also said
how I was pleased to see, having put the upgrade off for sufficiently
long, that I could leap from 8.04 to 10.04 as they were both LTS.  Now
10.10 is out I'll have to go 8.04 → 10.04 → 10.10.

That's the sequence you suggest above but it means you've missed 9.10
which *isn't* allowed or possible.  9.04 is non-LTS and the only upgrade
path is 9.10 so you must either have done that too or leaped LTS to LTS.
