Hi,

While I guess most of you are in Prague having discussions about these things,
I hope you won’t mind someone who is unable to attend but who follows your work
on the mailing lists from expressing an opinion...

Obviously, there’s a balance to be struck between short and long TLDs. The
advantages of short ones include eating less of the finite name length limit
and less typing for users, while their disadvantages include being less
descriptive and having less possibilities. I find external (7) to be too long,
that a length of 4 strikes a good balance.

I agree with Paul’s comment higher up this thread regarding other uses of the
word alternative and don’t feel that EXT is descriptive enough.

Maybe it’s a British thing but when I want to contact someone or something
elsewhere the word ring comes to mind, I ring them up or give them a ring.

Remote Interoperability Namespace Gateway

.ring

Which of course would fit nicely with onion.ring :)
According to ICANN’s website there doesn’t appear to be any existing
application for it.

Thanks,
Ian Maddison
