And experience has shown that different assumptions of how best to automate
things also cause problems.  So one side may be reduced to doing things
manually (and usually it's the registrant) when the registrant and registrar
used different implementations.

On the larger issue - It may be easier to say "The KSK is larger/longer
lived than the ZSK because..." than "The ZSK is smaller/shorter lived than
the KSK because..." and give the reasons.
