I came across the following quite fantastic book "Alternative DNS
Servers", by Jan-Piet Mens. Quite possibly everyone else already knows
about this book, but it's new to me

        http://www.uit.co.uk/BK-ADNS/HomePage

Roughly it's a
- handbook on setting up every likely DNS server you have heard of
- theory of dns
- cookbook ideas for all kinds of whacky scenarios (perl/lua shims to
achieve unusual requirements such as answering ldap queries over dns)
- DNSSEC howtos
- Performance evaluations

No relationship with the author other than a very impressed reader!

Note to Sam Crawford - interesting idea in there for "transparent"
forwarders which can check local sources first, but forward upstream if
not found
